Choosing Your Weight Loss Support System

Not sure who you can turn to for weight loss support besides your own doctor and the team at Slimband after your weight loss procedure?

Many people look to their family and friends for help, but some of them may be easier to work with than others. Identify the people who will be your best sources of support by looking for qualities that are positive and helpful. Look for things such as:

  • Good listening skills. When you're going through the inevitable "rough patches," you'll want to have someone around who really listens to what your challenges are and understands what you're struggling with.
  • Empathy. Sometimes, the best sources of support are people who have gone through something similar. Even if a friend or family member hasn't had bariatric surgery, if they've struggled with weight loss at some point in their lives, they may be better able to sympathize with your feelings.
  • Willingness and availability. No matter how much you would like someone to be there for you, they have to be willing to do so and have the time to do it. Make sure the people that you select to be on your support team have the time to share with you and the enthusiasm to be a part of the process.
  • Good rapport. If you pick people that you trust and feel good about talking to, your journey will be far easier than if you choose friends or family that make you feel defensive. Try to surround yourself with people who make you feel good about your triumphs and who don't focus too much on the bumps in the road.
