As I near my eighth year since my laparoscopic band surgery, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on how much this surgery and my involvement with the Bandster community has made a difference in my life.

I was a mother of three at the age of 34, when I finally decided that I needed to address my weight issue. I realized that I needed something that would give me hope of maintaining the weight I would lose. Previously I had tried various methods of weight loss, and was successful at times, but the weight always came back. This regaining of weight had me looking for a new alternative for weight loss.

Luckily, I came across the laparoscopic band shortly after it was approved for use in Canada. After researching it extensively on the internet, I knew this was what I was looking for. I waited patiently for my consult with the doctor and hoped that I would be accepted as a patient so that I could begin my journey to better health. When we met, we discussed the surgery; he informed me of the possible problems and let me ask any questions I had. Much to my delight, he decided that I was a good candidate for the procedure.

My weight loss journey began November of 2000, when I was banded. Slimband has been a constant source of support and encouragement for me from the very beginning. I've always had the proper level of restriction, followed the recommended dietary guidelines - so I successfully lost my excess weight. The online and in-person support groups have proved, and continue to be, an invaluable source of support for me along this journey.

Today, I am 80 pounds lighter and I am maintaining my weight quite well. I am a happier and healthier person. I have learned that while being thin does not solve all of life's problems, it does improve attitude and self-esteem.
