High Risk Cases
As a result of various health conditions, certain patients are at higher risk for surgical complications than others. Prior to moving forward with the Slimband procedure, a health assessment will take place to ensure the possibility of complications is avoided. We always weigh the potential risks against the benefits, however, when you consider that some estimates suggest that morbid obesity ranks as the second highest preventable cause of death (cigarette smoking being the leading cause) in North America, it would appear that for most, the benefits of this procedure outweigh the associated risks.
Some of the reasons why a patient would be considered high risk include:
- A previous failed weight-loss surgery
- A weight of over 400 pounds
- Being immobile
- Being over 60 years of age
- Having a liver condition
- Having co-morbidities such as diabetes or high blood pressure
Obese people generally suffer from a wide range of potentially serious conditions that include type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and sleep apnea. As a result of those issues, these people are typically considered "high risk" and therefore certain weight loss procedures are usually not an option for them.
Our surgical team were among the first to perform gastric banding procedures in Canada over 10 years ago, and have led the way in establishing standards for high-risk surgeries on bariatric patients. Based on research showing better outcomes at clinics that perform certain surgeries more often, Slimband has put together a team of specialists from anesthetists, to surgeons, to operating support staff who have performed very high volumes of bariatric procedures and intubations on both low and high risk patients.
Patients deciding where to proceed with elective but high-risk surgery can substantially improve their odds of success by selecting a clinic that has performed a large number of these more challenging cases. As the clinic that is currently performing the greatest number of gastric band surgeries in Canada, Slimband clearly meets this standard of safety. This is why it has become the clinic of choice for obese patients who are classified as high risk.
With the Slimband procedure, we are able to offer a safe choice that not only serves as a very real potential solution to a patient's weight concerns, but also many of the risk factors associated with obesity. Slimband has assembled the finest medical team that includes anesthetists who have performed more than 10,000 successful intubations with a large percentage of those on obese patients - both at the Slimband Clinic and in local hospitals. They understand that "high risk" patients require specialized attention, and with their expertise, you can take comfort in the knowledge that you are in good hands. As a result, Slimband has successfully treated thousands of patients who were considered "high risk" and who previously had nowhere else to turn to.
